The art of pointing - that's how photography has been
called. To me the most important aspect of
photography is to point out, to highlight, the extraordinary that is
enmeshed in the reality we see. Unlike other visual arts, photography allows the artist to instantly and
relatively easily create the concrete basis for further work: the raw
photographic image. Besides technical and compositional issues, the
fundamental option available to the photographer is the selection of the
subject to be photographed. I often try to capture images that reveal aspects
of the world that may expose beauty and harmony that normally escape our
attention. My most satisfying photographs
are the result of an intuitive process that finds the image that will be
recorded by
the camera, largely
without direct intervention of my intellect. Although great care is involved in planning the photograph and
producing the print, meeting and acknowledging that elusive moment is for me
the most intense part of the process. I like to think that at this moment the viewer and viewed coincide in a sort of magical
act in which the parts resonate and the image is recorded without conscious
thinking. If there is a "message" that I hope the final print
will convey, it is
to be a condensed representation of that feeling.
I have been
photographing since 1980, when I bought a 35 mm camera after finishing
college. Since then I have been a passionate photographer and used a variety
of cameras, including Canon's 5D and 300D, medium format
Pentax 6x7, Yashica 6x6, 35mm Nikon,
etc. Prints of my photographs are
available for purchase. See the "Prints" section of this web site for details.
